Personality: Hakkai, being the emotionally healthy adult he is not, spends most of his time hiding his feelings behind a mask. He is a very calm, polite young man who enjoys cooking and taking care of the house, and can almost always be found with a smile on his face. But don’t let surface impressions fool you; he’s capable of killing attackers and making death threats while still maintaining the same pleasant, quietly amused expression. While never one to start a fight, Hakkai is very protective of his friends and those who don’t have the ability to fight back, often considering his own survival very low on the list of priorities in comparison. He is filled with self-deprecation and guilt; a sinner whose soul is tainted by the blood of his sister and that of a thousand youkai, who believes himself beyond redemption. A large, abdominal scar and a prosthetic eye are reminders of it.

Being something of a mother hen in the group, seeing as he’s the only one capable of cooking, Hakkai is often tasked with keeping the peace among his companions, though this is sometimes achieved through his own cutting remarks. He has a very good memory, usually put to use with random and useless facts, and is capable of both learning quickly and teaching others, having once been a tutor himself. He does his best to keep up the spirits of the group when situations become particularly grim, and tends to be someone to whom other characters look to for advice, even if some of them would never admit it.

The downside to having such a constant control of his emotions is that when Hakkai does become angry, he is overwhelmed by it. It’s the youkai part of him, merciless and with a deep desire for revenge, that he fights to suppress yet can never banish. It’s existence is made all the worse by the fact that, as someone with the power to control chi, Hakkai is a healer. He literally channels his life energy into healing others, often pushing himself to his limit for the sake of others. Because no matter how much good he does and how many lives he saves, he will never be able to wash death from his hands.

Suitability: Hakkai is, overall, a very diligent worker with an almost inhuman ability to remain calm. Considering what he’s working for, paying off the debt will be a high priority for him.


Inventory: A green, eastern-style long-sleeve shirt, brown pants, and a white, over-the shoulder shawl make up his usual outfit. He wears a monocle over one eye, the other being prosthetic, and most importantly three small, silver cuffs over his ear. These function as limiters that suppress the youkai part of him.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Hakkai has mastered the art of chi manipulation, which he both as a weapon in battle and a tool for healing. He’s quick on his feet, being fairly versed in martial arts, and has a high pain tolerance, capable of keeping his cool in most circumstances (as long as they don’t strike a personal nerve). He excels at cooking, has a really good memory, and also seems to possess the inability to get drunk.

On the other hand, his vision is partly limited, since his left eye is fake and mostly usless, and is built somewhat gangly. He generally possesses the strength and agility of a normal human, unless he removes his limiters. In which case these are both amped up, and he gains the ability to manipulate the vine-like tattoo on his body into, well, actual vines that can trap enemies.
